ProgramsEducation at Rice. The Rice University Teacher Education Program prepares students to become secondary teachers (grades 8-12) in the state of Texas. Students from Rice who go into the schools are knowledgeable in the subjects they teach, in theories of education, and in the practice of teaching. The Rice Teacher Education Programs begin with a foundation in educational theory tempered by observation in local schools, move to practice through methods courses, and culminate with the integration of theory and practice through student teaching. Classes are offered during the day, Monday through Friday. Rice offers three types of teacher preparation programs for secondary teaching: Master of Arts in Teaching. The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) invites students holding a bachelor's degree to pursue graduate study in their major subject field and in education while preparing for teacher certification at the secondary level. At the core of the thirty-three hour degree program are 18 hours of professional education courses and student teaching necessary for state certification. The first teaching experience takes place during the six-week Summer School for Grades 8 through 12. The M.A.T. degree culminates with the Internship, a semester of teaching as a professional, full-time teacher in a Houston area secondary school, supervised by Rice faculty and supported by an accompanying seminar. In addition, students take graduate level courses in their teaching field and select from related electives to enrich their teaching and their own intellectual growth. Class III Certification. A non-degree (Class III) plan leading to secondary teacher certification is available for those who have earned bachelor's degrees but do not choose to pursue a graduate degree. Candidates complete all requirements for secondary teacher certification, including professional education courses and courses in their selected teaching fields. Rice Undergraduate Program. The Undergraduate Teacher Education Program involves teacher preparation in combination with an undergraduate degree in the subject field(s). Rice students may apply for admission during their sophomore, junior, or first semester of their senior year. Contact the program administrator for more information on admission criteria and procedures or for an appointment to discuss this program with a member of the faculty.
