Admission Information


MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) invites students holding a bachelor's degree to pursue graduate study in their major subject field and in education while preparing for teacher certification at the secondary level. The degree is designed to be individually tailored around the core teacher certification requirements and the student's own particular needs or desires for enrichment.

or by writing, visiting, calling or e-mailing the Education Certification Office at the address listed at the bottom of this page.

In support of the application, candidates must have an undergraduate degree and submit: 

  • official transcripts of previous university studies
  • four letters of reference accompanied by the forms provided in the application packet
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Graduate Record Examination score (no more than 5 years old, scores must be at or above the 70th percentile)
  • passing scores on (or documented exemption from) the THEA (formerly TASP) Test
  • $40.00 application fee

CLASS III/TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM  (Non-degree)

A non-degree (Class III) plan leading to secondary teacher certification is available for those who have earned a bachelor's degree but do not choose to pursue a graduate degree. Candidates complete all requirements for secondary teacher certification, including professional education courses and courses in their selected teaching fields.

In support of the application, candidates must submit:

  • official transcripts of previous university studies
  • 2.5 GPA or higher 
  • three letters of reference accompanied by the forms provided in the application packet
  • passing scores on (or documented exemption from) the THEA (formerly TASP) Test
  • $40.00 application fee

RICE UNDERGRADUATE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Rice Undergraduate Teacher Education Program seeks to recruit Rice undergraduates from a wide range of disciplines into the profession of teaching. The program involves teacher preparation in combination with an undergraduate degree in the subject field(s). Rice undergraduates may apply to the department for admission during their sophomore year.

In support of the application, candidates must submit:

  • transcripts of current and previous university studies
  • three letters of reference accompanied by the forms provided in the application packet
  • passing scores on (or documented exemption from) the THEA (formerly TASP) Test

 Applications may be obtained by writing, visiting, calling or e-mailing the Education Certification Office at the address listed at the bottom of this page.



Application Deadlines:
  • Master of Arts in Teaching: February 1
  • Class III/Teacher Certification: May 1
  • Rice Undergraduate Program: apply during sophomore, junior, or first semester of senior year

Applications are not considered complete and cannot be reviewed by the faculty until all transcripts, applicable test scores, and recommendations have been received by the department.
